Canoeing the Trough is not just a canoe trip but an unusual trip unlike any other in the east next to New River Gorge. The high ridges, mountains, and wildlife really give you that feeling of really being out there. In the Spring and early summer there's an abundance of smallmouth bass, bluegill and some largemouth bass. The South Brach of the Potomac River winds thru the trough (canyon). You have very high cliffs, ridges, and step wooded inclines loaded with wildlife for 7 miles. There are a few class I and II rapids. I highly recommend this outfitter and doing the Trough run for a unique canoeing experience.

As an added note Terry and I have done all the trips listed on their site and then some and there's not a bad trip among them. Gerry and Sabrina at the Trough General Store have give us great service for years. The Trough General Store is located on County Road 8 between Romeny and Moorefield WVA.

Camping is spotty at best but there are some spots but make camp early as sites few fill up fast on weekends and don't be too picky. The best time is during the week. Water level is important or you might have to do some dragging on some trips, check with the general store for the best run. While camping in the Trough please leave No Trace as this is a pristine wilderness area.

Gerry at the Trough General Store has camping and Camp Wapacoma just down the road has camping.

Don't be afraid to ask the shuttle drivers for fishing tips and rapid info. We once did a upper run for the first time and it was a great run but we had a very interesting rapid near the end. Later I asked our driver "How come you didn't tells us about that rapid?" He answered "You didn't ask me. You only asked me about fishing." He was right, boy did we catch some fish, Terry caught her biggest Smallmouth bass to date.
